Additional information
This paper presents fundamental research in the area of robotic control in semi-constrained environments. Conventionally, robots are used in constrained manufacturing cells to undertake repetitive tasks, the objective of the new multi-agent approach is to enable robots to undertake repetitive tasks in scenarios where slight differences may occur between one location and the next, such as on a railway track. The research informed the proposal for the successful European FP7 research application AUTOMAIN. In 2009 the paper received a ‘special commendation’ from the IMechE for being one of the best papers published in 2008.
