Additional information

The work at Birmingham with the MoD (1992 to present) has enabled the deployment of underwater acoustic communications networks. This paper details theoretically and practically, for the first time, how such networks can be used for the navigation of autonomous underwater vehicles. Previously, there have been no publications showing how such an acoustic network can self-calibrate the positions of the nodes with only two GPS surface reference buoys. The method provides a precision navigation capability without incurring additional cost and technological overheads. The self-calibration technique is currently implemented within the Atlas Elektronik underwater network capability.
