Two dimensional experimental study for the behaviour of surface footings on unreinforced and reinforced sand beds overlying soft pockets
The effect of localised soft pockets on the behaviour of subsurface soils under foundation loadings is poorly understood. Lack of detailed investigations to quantify their effect has hindered the development of analytical models. The paper therefore presents results of a comprehensive investigation undertaken to quantify the efficiency of using reinforcement layers in order to enhance the bearing capacity of soils that are characterised by the existence of localised soft pockets. The results provided deeper understanding of the critical parameters that control the behaviour of reinforced sand beds overlying soft pockets as well as the associated failure mechanisms
