This paper deals with a topical real-world problem of extracting information on foetal well-being through low cost, single microphones placed on the maternal abdomen. It describes a novel signal processing algorithm design to minimise noise whilst extracting foetal activity. The method was tested on a data set obtained from a cohort of pregnant women with the right inclusion criteria. Lead author Gonzalez (aidaj@xanum.uam.mx) received a CONACYT scholarship (ref 114145) from the Mexican Government to complete the study and has now secured a permanent academic position at UNAM, Mexico.
