Darwin's Ghosts was the outcome of seven years of research across many different disciplines. Spanning 2,200 years and many different countries, it seeks to determine the characteristics and conditions that produced evolutionary speculation at particular times and places. To complete this task Stott needed to uncover multiple and braided material histories, such as those of pigeon breeding, curiosity cabinets, trade routes, papermaking and zoos, as well as to engage with complex intellectual and scientific ideas. Finally it required extensive correspondence with intellectual historians across Europe.
