Arterial Stiffening Relates to Arterial Calcification But Not to Noncalcified Atheroma in Women : A Twin Study
There is controversy about association between osteoporosis measured by bone mineral density (BMD), calcification of the aorta, that leads to an increase in pulse wave velocity, and hypertension. We used CT to quantify arterial calcification and related this to BMD and pulse wave velocity in a genotyped twin cohort. There is no relationship between BMD and pulse wave velocity while there is strong correlation between pulse wave velocity and calcification. Loss of bone density in osteoporosis is not the mechanism for aortic calcification and high cardiovascular risk. Frost led the acquisition and interpretation of the bone density and CT measurements.
