Special Issue: Current Issues in Higher Music Education
This is an example of an output that helps to maintain and extend the scholarly infrastructure for research in music education. Working with John O’Flynn (St Patrick’s College, Dublin), the researcher guest edited this special issue of Music Education Research, undertaking all functions of editor-in-chief. Broad and O’Flynn developed the themes for the issue, centring on Higher Education, managed the peer-review process and contributed a contextualising editorial.
Although the issue was specifically conceived to address a gap in the music education literature, the call for papers generated a large number of suitable contributions from researchers worldwide, far more than could be accommodated in a single issue. The result of this was a significantly enhanced curatorial role for the editors, who then had to select papers that would demonstrate the breadth of the field and its methodological plurality within the given constraints, and a steady stream of papers in this field published in subsequent issues of Music Education Research.
The researchers have followed up their work on this issue with a panel session on Higher Music Education at the 2013 Research in Music Education Conference (University of Exeter).
