Biotic sol-gel coating for the inhibition of corrosion in seawater
The development of biotic sol-gel materials is pioneering work of SHU. Crucially in this study, lab-based scientific observations were validated by longer term immersion trials at Whitby Harbour. Important observations were the compatibility of the endospore with the solvent during manufacture, the distribution of the endospore cells within the coating, and the coating's ability to inhibit of substrate corrosion and withstand biofouling. A combination of corrosion inhibition and ant-fouling activity demonstrated the potential of these systems for delivering coatings capable of functioning well without the release of harmful agents into their aquatic surroundings.
