Fundamental study of the interfaces in novel multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced alumina nanocomposites fabricated by hot-pressing. For the first time, an aluminium oxy-carbide reaction phase was observed and attributed to causing strong connections with both CNTs and the matrix leading to higher fracture toughness.
