English abstract

This is the first volume of a two-volume edition of ballets danced at the court of Louis XIII between 1610 and 1643. It is dedicated to a study of the major political ballets of the time, whose symbolism and performance aimed at glorifying the monarch and his policies. It also traces the evolution of the genre from its Renaissance origins and the belief in universal harmony to its more directly propagandistic use in the 1630s and 1640s under the leadership of Cardinal Richelieu.
