Additional information

Auxetic materials have negative Poisson's ratios which give rise to interesting properties. Paper describes first example of fully-3D foam structure with all negative Poisson's ratio characteristics: high stiffness and energy dissipated per unit volume. Route to large-scale manufacturing is also proposed. Led to European patent with Rolls-Royce plc. (EP2319674-A1). First-author Bianchi was awarded IMechE Western Aerospace Centre Annual Prize 2012 for work [tinyurl.com/gen-eng-78].
