The paper details the development and deployment of a novel algorithm for the detection of anomalous signals inspired by the function of detectors found in the immune system. The deployment and demonstration of the algorithm on a robot and its operation in a real world environment showed its potential for the autonomous detection of unusual and potentially dangerous chemicals in difficult environments (such as chemical weapons on battle fields or improvised explosive devices in urban environments).
