Published in one of the leading journals in robotics, the paper describes the development and use of a tele-operated surface craft to assist glaciologists in gathering high-resolution sonar data at the marine terminus of glaciers in Greenland and assesses the potential for further development. This has lead to the design, construction and deployment of a second (fully autonomous) craft both in Greenland and around the U.K. for various geological, glaciological and archaeological survey projects. Removing personnel from the danger zone and improving the quality of the survey data are two of the main advantages of this approach.
