This paper presents an simulation based study on IP packet size variability in real time traffic, a relevant traffic statistic due to the fact that fixed size packets can improve streaming of compressed video (MPEG-4). The paper considers smoothed video, and whether it is possible to achieve a high proportion of a target fixed packet sizes for the stream, given that video frames can be fragmented and concatenated. The paper’s novel contribution was to demonstrate to what degree the use of smoothing can help achieve a target packet size for a video stream.
