Additional information

This paper presents a new approach to three dimensional modelling of crack initiation in a deforming microstructure. This work was Project A6 in the EPSRC-funded Rail Research UK 2 (RRUK2) programme (£220k). The model is verified with results from twin-disc tribological tests, and the paper offers new insights into the effect of large plastic deformations on early crack growth.
