This paper presents a new microstructural model of rail steel for studying crack initiation and predicting rail life. The work was Project A2 in the EPSRC-funded Rail Research UK (RRUK) programme, and has been further developed as part of the EC funded project INNOTRACK (31415; Newcastle award £181k).
