Probing interactions of the HIV protein GP120 with lipids and CD4 receptors
This paper determines the self assembly and interactions of proteins and receptors involved in the attachment of the HIV virus particles to cell membranes. By understanding how the viral particle attaches at the molecular level strategies to block attachment can be derived. This paper demonstrates for the first time that part of the viral protein attacks and sinks into the lipids as well as specifically interacts with cell membrane receptors. The work reported in this paper was carried out as part of EPSRC project “Surface Nanostructures For The Study of Biomolecular Recognition, Chirality And Crystal Growth” (EP/F025688/1; £298k).
