Simultaneous Conversion of Triglyceride/Free Fatty Acid Mixtures into Biodiesel using Sulfated Zirconia
This is the first description of the use of sulphated zirconia as a catalyst for simultaneous esterification of free fatty acids and triglycerides. "Direct synthesis" of the catalyst by heating mixtures of components is shown to be more effective than the more conventional "wet" technique. This means that a catalyst-free biodiesel production process based on low value (high free fatty acid) waste oil feedstocks is feasible. The free fatty acids would become beneficial rather than problematic. The research was carried out as part of the EPSRC project “Designer Catalysts for High Efficiency Biodiesel Production” (EP/F067372/1).
