The research reported in this paper introduces and validates a novel stiffness modelling approach which has wide applicability to the mechanical assessment of very thin coatings on polymeric (low stiffness) substrates. The research was carried out under a Royal Academy of Engineering/Leverhulme Trust Fellowship, and the paper was selected by the editor for inclusion in the Virtual Journal of Nanoscale Science and Technology (Volume 25, Issue 3, 2012).
