Additional information

This paper pioneers research into gelatin-graphene nanocomposites, and is the first to demonstrate that additions of ≤2wt.% graphene oxide provide significant yet concurrent improvements of strength, stiffness, ductility, toughness and bioactivity of a biopolymer. This is counter to the normal observation that the addition of a filler leads to increased stiffness, but decreased toughness. These exceptional results open a new pathway to the enhancement of general biopolymers by improving various mechanical properties simultaneously with a cost-effective nanofiller. They also act as a catalyst for the use of biopolymer-graphene nanocomposites to fabricate novel tissue scaffolds and micro needle arrays.
