This (120,000 word) monograph originates from a 2003 PhD thesis, expanding upon the thesis’ focus on representations of the symposion in 4th C philosophical literature, to embrace literary texts and visual material from Archaic to Imperial periods, and to explore the role of the symposion in Greek discourses about society, politics and ethics. The main work was carried out from 2006-2012, and was supported e.g. by a three-month Visiting Fellowship at the Institute of Classical Studies (2006) and a British Council-funded spell as Visiting Scholar in the Centre for Classical and Near Eastern Studies in Sydney (2009).
