Assessment of Small Bend Diameter Magnesium Diboride Wire for a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter Application
This paper represents new research on superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) sponsored by Rolls-Royce. It describes work on a new round-wire form of the latest superconducting material magnesium diboride. This paper demonstrates that low bend diameters of the wire can be achieved, a key requirement for the development of commercial SFCLs. The work is developing rapidly: four patent applications published (US2012115733; US2011026170; WO2009010715; US2012115733), one patent granted (US8117861B2). Rolls-Royce licensed the technology in 2010. A consortium ETI project (Applied Superconductors Ltd, Rolls-Royce, E.ON, Western Power Distribution) are developing a commercial SFCL for installation on the UK network. (Contact details available.)
