English abstract

This paper examines the nature of conservative noble opposition in Poland to the limited reforms introduced 1763-64. All actors were constrained by the overbearing influence of Russia, determined to manage Polish affairs for its own ends. The paper focuses on the ‘Grawamina’ drawn up during 1766 by leading oppositionists with their detailed exposition of the alleged malpractices of the reformers. The insurgent Confederacy of Bar of 1768, reacting against Russian pressure, sought to introduce the same changes which the Confederacy of Radom of 1767 would have wanted to secure, had it not been subject to Russian force majeure.
