<29>The formal assessment of surgical skills has grown in importance recently, with increasing evidence that unstructured systems of assessment have poor reproducibility, large inter-observer variation and lack of quantifiable measures. We have developed a novel computational method that can analyse and feedback objective information on surgical performance from a video of live surgery. This will therefore contribute to: feedback on dexterity performance during surgery; formative assessment of surgical performance; surgical training towards certification purposes; portfolio for consultant surgeons for revalidation; and, ultimately, improved patient safety.
