Significance of output:
This paper reports collaborative work with Rolls-Royce plc. Modern turbofan aircraft engines, at take-off, produce “buzz-saw” noise owing to the fan tip speed exceeding the speed of sound. A tailored version of the prediction code for this important noise source was written specifically for the Noise department at Rolls-Royce, and has been extensively used by the Company since 2004 as the main method for predicting buzz-saw noise on the family of Trent engines. In this new paper, a full validation of the method is reported, using Rolls-Royce proprietary data.
