Britain, France and the Gothic, 1764-1820: The Import of Terror
This 90,000-word monograph draws upon a substantial and hitherto understudied body of both French and English sources. Overall, 192 primary sources were used. Of these, a number were read in the original French and, as the end-notes indicate, Wright translated a number of the sources herself. The book also draws upon manuscript material held in Boston’s public library in the USA, as well as a wide range of periodical articles from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The monograph further required in-depth understanding of the complexity of the on-going Anglo/French conflict in this period and debates about literary translation.
