A new hip epiphyseal prosthesis: Design revision driven by a validated numerical procedure
This research output describes an experimental and numerical investigation that drove Stryker Corporation to a revision of a prototype hip implant they had under development. The original design was found to reduce by over 20% the femoral neck strength, with a considerable risk of post-operative bone fracture. The new design that emerged from this study produced no weakening of femoral strength, and other improvements; it is now commercialised as PER prosthesis (Stryker Orthopaedics, Hérouville-Saint-Clair, France. Contact: contact: President Directeur General). The methods used can be applied to virtually any other prosthetic design.
