Bild und Kontext — eine Annäherung an die tyrische Bronzeprägung des dritten Jahrhunderts
This paper aims to situate the motifs of Tyrian bronze coinage in the late second and third century AD in their social and political contexts. After a short overview of Tyrian coin imagery, the relevance of the titles metropolis and colonia are discussed. The paper also addresses the question of why these epithets disappear and reappear during a short period under Elagabalus and why the repertoire of motifs changes dramatically during this period. Finally, it discusses the issue of the sudden occurrence of ‘Phoenician’ on coins in the mid-third century and its significance for our understanding of communal self-presentation.
