Additional information

<27>Manufacturing powder- and grain-based commodities (e.g. pills, construction-aggregates) relies crucially on eliminating "jamming" of particles in confined flows. Computationally extracting quantities inaccessible to experiments (e.g. contact forces) is essential. Our algorithm is novel in its incorporation of dynamics, allowing the first ever study of how jamming emerges with time. New universal scaling laws we uncovered link particle flows to a different field (glass physics), so application of the latter (more advanced) understanding should lead to major industrially relevant breakthroughs. Follow-on collaboration with Tokyo (DOI:10.1209/0295-5075/91/40008) introduced our algorithm to the growing field of active (biological) matter, with rapid uptake (e.g. DOI:10.1039/C0SM00888E).
