Algal wastewater treatment systems for seasonal climates: application of a simple modelling approach to generate local and regional design guidelines
Significance of output:
This paper presents the culmination of previous investigations into the potential benefits of climate-based modelling for waste stabilisation pond systems. The methodology allows development of design guidelines covering a vast geographical area, based on matching system performance to WHO standards. The work shows how taking climatic factors into account reduces the size of engineering infrastructure required while increasing re-use, in regions of water scarcity. Use of long-series climate data also permits tailoring of designs to specific sites. The results apply not only to continental regions, but to the wide range of locations intermediate between cold-climate modes and year-round steady-state operation.
