Additional information

<15> Originality: This paper provides the first method for combining different forms of annotation with a normal form which is useful in deciding whether two or more combined annotations are equivalent.

Significance: The main value of curated databases lies in expert annotation (e.g. the curation of the SWISS-PROT sequence database). This paper shows that there are many natural cases in which annotations are not independent and it is necessary to choose the appropriate algebraic structure when there is a dependency between annotations.

Rigour: Appeared in a top database conference, the ACM International Conference on Database Theory: proofs in the appendix.
