Investigations on air induced segregation of pharmaceutical powders and effect of material flow functions
Reporting on multinational industry-funded project to investigate the role of air flow in causing blends of pharmaceutical powders to demix in transfer, which has big cost implications in industry. Found that air-induced segregation was principal cause of problems previously ascribed to other causes; also, the role of the powder cohesion was evaluated which had never previously been recorded. Due to regulatory considerations, take-up in industry will take time but several industry users have started to embed the improved practices indicated. 3 follow on project so far funded by industry using the same technique to research the properties of their materials.
Role of researcher: Hands-on research on project, as well as analysis, interpretation of data and development of recommendations in the project
