Additional information
For the first time a fast response instrument (10 Hz) was used to analyse the dispersion and transformation of particles in the 5-560 nm size range. This allowed the first in situ analysis of the fast transformation processes that nanoparticles undergo once released from the tailpipe and, again for the first time, their complex interaction with the vehicle wake. One of the most significant findings was that particles entrained in the car wake differed from new freshly emitted particles. The originality of the paper, as well as its impact on the field, is evidenced by the high number of citations.
