Green composites: sustainability and mechanical performance
In a world where petrochemical resources are finite, but where composite materials are becoming ever more important, plant-derived resources (which do not compromise the ability of the planet to feed itself) are essential. The work presented here arose from a MiNMaT EngD with Scott Bader Ltd. The project was interested in aspects of “natural composites”: here natural fibres are considered in terms of the ability to produce a usable composites component with standard Scott Bader products, as well as with resin systems where specific constituents have been replaced with bioderived content. Unusually, the content here is functional, not a filler.
