This was adjudged the best paper published by the IChemE in 2010, with the author receiving the Senior Moulton Medal for that year as a consequence. The subject, asphaltene separation, is of great concern to the oil industry because of detrimental issues that arise from their presence in crude oils during production and refining. The paper demonstrates the scale-up and application of fundamental concepts of surfactant chemistry to a practical process, potentially applicable on an industrial scale, given appropriate economics.
