Additional information

Measurements of bond stress usually employ load control and so cannot adequately capture its post-peak variation. The work reported combines measurement of global bar strain, and its local distribution along the bar, to assess the behaviour of rebar undergoing controlled displacements up to 25 mm. That the post-peak behaviour exhibits (previously unreported) consistent and reproducible variations suggest that the failure behaviour of RC structures, and their robustness, can be significantly influenced by the transverse rib pattern. This provides an experimental under-pinning to the development of improved model codes for the pull-out behaviour of steel bars within concrete.
