Additional information

This award winning paper (runner up prize Lloyd’s Science of Risk) on the first application of Uncertainty Quantification to Film Cooling explains why geometries with good performance in laboratory tests do not necessarily work in real gas turbines. The paper shows the importance of manufacturing deviations on coolant performance and that they can alter the prediction of discharge coefficient by more than 10%. The paper is the result of a collaboration with the University of Florence, Italy. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries sponsored further work with a PhD studentship and two wind tunnels, used to develop a new geometry, patented by MHI.
