Additional information

The introduction of hygienic sanitation has been shown by several authors to improve significantly the health of communities who previously have used inappropriate facilities. Yet morbidity and mortality resulting from poor sanitation remains shamefully high in many developing countries. There is a broad range of sanitation options available, but very little knowledge about the relative health benefits of each. This paper shows for the first time that there are additional health gains from sewerage over other forms of improved sanitation. This information is expected to have a significant impact on the funding decisions of major aid donors.
