Additional information

A novel foam material was proposed for better energy absorption capacity. It has proved to be superior over traditional foams on cushioning performance. The results were presented as design charts to facilitate use in applications. This work has led to further funding awarded to the research group and collaborators for manufacturing the prototype material. This work was followed by the investigation of applications in the equestrian helmet liner to reduce jockey head injuries, funded by the Irish Turf Club. This material has wide applications in other cushioning structures (34 citations as of November 2013, Web of Science).
