Additional information

Games consoles are rapidly increasing in number and functionality resulting in significant energy use increases. To manage consumption the EU (amongst others) seek to introduce control measures. Manufacturers/legislators lacked a plausible basis for agreeing ‘baseline’ consumption against which the efficacy of measures could be assessed. This joint Surrey/Sony research critiqued existing methodologies, undertook primary research (direct measurements and survey data) to plug data gaps resulting in the definitive study of console energy use. These data and methodology have persuaded the EU that a manufacturer-led voluntary agreement on limiting consumption represents the best means of addressing the issue in the EU.
