Fatigue analysis of riveted railway bridge connections using the theory of critical distances
The paper deals with the application of a novel fatigue assessment methodology, which has been developed within the mechanical and automotive field, for the purpose of analysing riveted bridge connections. This is the first time this methodology has been applied in bridge engineering and the paper presents implementation issues, as well as highlighting that the way in which these details are treated by present bridge codes may be non-conservative. The methodology can be used in refined assessment of old metallic bridges as they approach the end of their service life, resulting in savings from unnecessary or premature replacements.
