Climate change influence on building lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions: Case study of a UK mixed-use development
A novel methodology was developed with Parsons Brinckerhoff to estimate building lifecycle GHG emissions (embodied and operational) at an early design stage, accounting for changing weather conditions predicted by climate models during the building’s operational phase. This allows heating and cooling requirements over the whole operational life to be accounted for by engineers at the design phase, ensuring resilience in response to changes in climate and enabling forward planning to reduce GHG emissions over the building’s whole life. The paper makes a significant contribution to the nationally and internationally important issues of climate change mitigation and adaptation for buildings.
