<20>This paper's significance is that it challenged the accepted orthodoxy in proposing and empirically demonstrating the concept that more fluid interactions and greater awareness of others may be achieved on shared interfaces (such as tabletop devices) by avoiding rigid ownership protocols. This has rapidly emerged as the definitive reference on the topic and has become agenda setting in forming the foundation of a key design rule for the creation of multi-touch interfaces. The paper was published in CSCW which is a top HCI conference with an 18% acceptance rate.
