Significance of output:

This paper reports the first experimental demonstration of high-speed data-processing using cascaded second-order nonlinear processes in a periodically-poled-lithium-niobate-waveguide (PPLN). The result demonstrates how PPLN devices offer prospects for compact devices for high-speed all-optical signal-processing, and demonstrates how this technology-platform is capable of providing novel signal-processing applications that are likely to be required in future all-optical networks. Funded by EPSRC (EP/F032218/1, 2008 – 2011, £273k) the work resulted in >10 articles in journals and at international conferences including an invited talk (ICTON’10). These results subsequently sparked considerable international (NTT Japan, and NICT Japan) research-interest on phase-sensitive optical signal-processing using this material-system.
