Significance of output:

This is the first ever demonstration of a technique that achieves quantisation of the optical phase to an arbitrary, in principle, number of levels. The technique combines advances in both low-noise laser and optical fibre technologies to demonstrate sophisticated processing of optical signals. The work capitalises on our world lead on signal processing based on parametric effects in optical fibres and has led to >5 invited presentations, including one at the Optical Fiber Communications conference (OFC'2012). The demonstrated technique is extremely versatile and an enabler for several far-fetching applications, such as analogue-to-digital conversion (as complement to electronic processors) or noise-suppression.
