Significance of output:

The research described in this paper highlighted inaccuracies in the existing international standard for cable ratings in tunnels (Electra 143), which is widely used by transmission/distribution companies around the world to define safe maximum operating conditions. This paper will be referenced in the forthcoming international CIGRE guide on current ratings. The work led to further funding from EDF Energy Networks (£40k) and National Grid (£375k). The research team now works closely with National Grid, influencing the design of major new tunnel projects (project value >£500m, ken.chitty@nationalgrid.com) and optimising refurbishments.
