This work formed the basis for two successful applications of Henning Sprekeler and Tim P. Vogels for the Bernstein Awards 2011 and 2012 (EUR1.25M each). The Bernstein award is given out yearly by the German Ministry of Science and Education to one outstanding young researcher in the field of Computational Neuroscience, who is selected on the basis of the best research proposal. The article also led to a successful application of Tim P. Vogels for a Henry Dale Fellowship of the Wellcome Trust. It was recommended as “a must read” by the Faculty of 1000 (http://f1000.com/717958055).
