Additional information

The driver for this work is the need for DC circuit breakers to make the future DC grids for harnessing renewable energy a reality. In addition the realisation of a medium voltage dc breaker based on this principle of convoluted arcs can be applied to dc traction systems. The research demonstrated the potential for this novel technology and consequently further funding has been secured from the Higher Education Innovation Fund to continue the work. This was a collaborative project between Staffordshire University and Liverpool University.
