Vice Versâ
Merchant’s 2011 edition of Vice Versâ, by Thomas Anstey Guthrie, is the only scholarly treatment of a novel of 1882 whose Victorian popularity tells us much about that age but whose current status as hidden treasure is indicated by the imprint—Victorian Studies—under which this edition appears. Its introduction and explanatory notes, respectively commended by The Year’s Work in English Studies as “detailed ” and “useful and extensive” (YWES 92, 696), place the novel within a number of intersecting fictional traditions and situate it in relation to both precursors and descendants. Four substantial appendices serve to present and discuss rare material some of which is otherwise unavailable outside the British Library.
