An integrated model of designing to aid understanding of the complexity paradigm in design practice
This research builds on earlier work featured at the International Conference on Complexity Science, Embracing Complexity in Design, Paris (November 2005) concerning the relationship of theory and practice to support the work of designers. Young was involved in the Embracing Complexity in Design project, part of the Designing for the 21st Century programme, since its inception and presented at several of its workshops and seminars. The article describes the development of an integrated model of design that combines descriptions of design content, context and process in order to improve the design practitioner's ability to navigate complex projects.
The work also introduces the self reflective role of the designer, which has been further developed by Dorst (2008), ‘Design research: a revolution-waiting-to-happen.’ Design Issues 29, (1). pp 4-11. Young’s research acted as the basis for Tan’s, Rao’s and Singelton’s doctoral programmes in social innovation and service design methods.
